CdM, Costa Mesa blank foes

Shutouts were the name of the game Thursday afternoon in high

school girls soccer as Corona del Mar handled Calvary Chapel in

Pacific Coast League play, 2-0, and Costa Mesa continued its

domination of the Golden West League with a 7-0 spanking of visiting

Santa Ana.

Corona del Mar, which hosts Northwood on Tuesday in a PCL

showdown, improved to 7-3-1, 4-0-0 in league with a dominating

display, forcing Calvary Chapel’s goalie into 17 saves, while CdM’s

goal was not attacked, at all.

Taylor Fallon scored the first goal in the 44th minute when she

took a corner kick from Alivia Mazura and headed the ball in.

Later a cross from Fallon set up Rachel Yelsey and the latter

booted the ball home from 15 yards out.

Costa Mesa’s victory improved the Mustangs’ record to 13-1-2, 7-0

in the Golden West League.

Sharon Day had three goals and two assists, and her sister,

freshman Jasmin Day, had two goals and an assists.

Toshia Bryant had a goal, Jenny Sparks had a goal and an assist,

Nilani Duarte had an assist and Rachel Hughes had an assist.

Santa Ana, 5-7-3, 1-4-1 in league, gave the Mustangs a strong

effort, but was unable to solve Mesa’s defense. Santa Ana goalkeeper

Anna Barrera had 20 saves.

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at

Woodbridge as the hosts came up with a score off a free kick, set up

by a penalty, which hit the crossbar, only to be headed in.

Krystal Wright, with an assist from Taryn Flamson, scored in the

58th minute to tie the Sea View League encounter at 1-1.

Newport goalkeeper Kara DeMille was credited with five saves.

The Sailors fell to 4-8-5, 2-2-1 in league play.
