AYSO 120: Costa Mesa’s boys- and girls under-12 soccer teams from
AYSO Region 120 began the All-Star season with two victories apiece.
The girls’ team, nicknamed “Fast & Furious,” shut out both Newport
Beach and South Irvine, 2-0, Saturday.
Daisy Martinez scored both goals as Fast & Furious defeated South
Irvine. Midfielders Mariah Bailey, Kendra Fisher, Abby Schaeffer and
Alex Payzant controlled their part of the field.
Forward Jenna Turner and halfback Cori Patelski provided constant
pressure on Irvine’s defense. Sweeper Carlee Tuppan, along with Fox,
Chapin and Bailey, led the defense.
In the team’s first game, striker Alexa Aguilar switched the ball
to Martinez at forward, who then passed to Stephanie Fox for the
first goal in the 2-0 defeat of Newport. Halfback Cori Chapin added
another goal with a strong kick from the penalty area.
Strong defense was played by Karen Williams, Teresa Fox and
Breanna Arellano.
* In boys under-12 action, the Costa Mesa Scorpions posted wins
of 2-0 and 3-2.
In the 2-0 win, Joey Eggers drew the goalie out with a strong-side
shot, leaving Calvin Tran open to tap it in for the first goal.
In the fourth quarter, Ricky Saldana trapped a pass and ran all
the way down the field against two defenders. Saldana shot from 25
yards out and the ball went off the goalie’s fingers into the goal.
In Mesa’s first game, Rafael Gomez scored two goals, one on an
assist from Andrew Guerrero, and forward Jonathan Knauer added a
single goal early in the first quarter.
Erick Loera denied a potential game-tying shot and led the defense
along with Eggers, who stopped a shot in goal in the third period.
Newport-Mesa wins, 44-23
YOUTH HOOPS: The Newport-Mesa All-Net seventh-grade boys
basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 44-23 victory over the Yorba
Linda Stars.
Jonathan Howse and R.J. D’Cruz picked up key rebounds in holding
Yorba Linda to nine first-half points.
Jamie McGee led all scorers with 16 points while Robbie Boyer,
Kyle Caldwell and Joe Eberhard each tallied six. Ali Meshkin had four
points and Will Kelly, P.J. Simpson and John Swift each had two to
round out the scoring.
In boys sixth-grade play:
* Newport 40, Cypress 38
Michael Helfrich scored the game-winning three-point basket to
lead Newport to its fourth consecutive win.
Andrew McDonald, Frank DeNoewer and J.B. Green also knocked down
key three-pointers down the stretch.
The defense was keyed by Danny Moskovits, Cameron Holmes and Danny
Miller while Joey Jones shot well from the outside.
Sean Donovan led the rebounding and played tough defense while
Nick Freeman helped the team at both ends of the floor.
In boys fifth-grade play:
* Newport Red Raiders 49, El Toro 31
The Red Raiders are now 4-0 and lead the All-Net South Division.
Parker Stone (10 points) along with Fletcher Della Grotta and
Dillon Campbell (each with eight points) led the scoring while Austin
Rios (seven) and Trevor Miles (six) took care of the rebounds.
Randall Nelson tallied 10 assists and Collin Krahe had six steals
for the victors.
Wildman’s buzzer-beater
YOUTH HOOPS: Taylor Wildman scored the winning basket as time
expired to give the Costa Mesa Wizards’ Boys Club 4 basketball team
its third win.
With 11 seconds to go Andrew Duhoux chased down a loose ball and
tossed it to Wildman for the winning basket.
The Wizards (3-1) trailed by 10 at halftime and tied the game with
30 seconds remaining in the contest.
Wyeth Rietveld led the Wizards with 16 points and Wildman added 14
with Dominic Re contributing five points and six rebounds.
Duhoux led the team in rebounding with eight.
Spencer Rautus had two blocked shots, two steals and chipped in
three points while Cassidy Gatewood’s rebounding enabled the Wizards
to remain within striking distance.
Golden Hawks prevail, 22-13
AYSO 120: The Golden Hawks beat the Wizards, 22-13, in the battle
of undefeated teams in Newport-Mesa third- and fourth-grade girls
National Junior Basketball action.
Ellie Nadal led the Hawks with 11 points and several assists to
her six other teammates who scored.
Kelsey Woo contributed four points and 12 rebounds and the
stifling defense was led by Taleen Shrikian and Olivia Tharp.
Brooke Lux led the Wizards with seven points and Cassie Stratton
added both strong defense and rebounding.
In other action:
* Lakers 24, Sparks 17
Kelsey Carrido led the Lakers with 11 points with Elika Fateri
(seven points) and Valerie Martin (six) leading the scoring.
Alex Aiello led the Sparks with four points.
* Newport Magic 16, Irvine Broncos 11
Laura Martinez (nine points), Niki Zak (five points), Anna Scott
and Taylor McLaughlin paced the Magic scoring.
Sara Silverman and Emma Kaye led the Magic defense.
Newport Beach Breakers blank foes
AYSO 97: The Newport Beach Breakers stormed to two straight
shutouts to open AYSO Region 97 girls under-10 soccer action.
The silver all-star team defeated Tustin, 2-0, and its sister team
from Newport Beach, 3-0.
Shannon Boler scored both goals against Tustin at the Tustin
Sports Complex.
Lauren Terry went the distance in goal, making five saves. The
Breakers had 12 shots on goal and controlled possession for most of
the game.
Maria Swift, Lexi Jenkins and Kelly Rorden played strong defense
allowing the Breakers to keep possession in front of the Tustin goal.
Swift scored two goals and Claire Castillo added another goal in
Newport’s 3-0 win.
Courtney McIntosh, Josie Jogwe, Monique Conant, Terry and Boler
created several scoring chances with skillful dribbling and passing.
Jenkins, Rorden, Christy Olhaver and Tempest Blaine led the
defense.
Hornets sting Kings, 50-38
YOUTH HOOPS: Eric Rask and Gus Ellis each scored 15 points to lead
the Hornets to a 50-38 victory over the Kings in Newport-Mesa
National Junior Basketball action.
The Hornets, a seventh- and eighth-grade boys team, moved to 5-0
with the win.
Ellis grabbed 12 rebounds and had two assists while Rask tallied
two rebounds and four assists.
Also contributing on offense were Chase Pinesett (four points and
four rebounds), Thomas Dialynas (five points, three rebounds and two
steals) and J.P. Gormly (four points, six rebounds, one assist and
two steals).
Steady defense was provided by Andy Rovzar (four points, two
assists and four steals), Timothy Regan (one rebound), Austin
Apramian (three rebounds) and Kevin Rask (three points and one
assist).
CdM Gold All-Star boys win, 4-1
YOUTH SOCCER: Two goals by Kjell Wolker keyed a 4-1 win for the
Corona del Mar boys gold All-Star soccer team over South Irvine.
Connor Gaal headed-in a shot for a goal off an assist from Mason
Case to round out the scoring. Hector Marino took a rebound of a shot
from CdM’s Brent Gray to give the victors a 1-0 lead in the second
quarter.
Brent Lawson, Jack McBean and Brennan Anderson continued with
offensive pressure. The defense was led by Blake Thomsen, Gray,
Garrett Larson and goalie Clark Cashion.
Newport Beach Gold drops two
YOUTH SOCCER: Newport Beach’s gold team in the boys under-12
competition fought hard in losses to Costa Mesa (4-0) and Tustin
(5-0).
Adrian Rodriguez, Jay Ordaz, Sean Thompson and Grady Kough all had
shots on goal with help from Joel Betonte and Easton Giedt.
Christian Scott and Derek Boler hustled along with midfielders
Kyle Evans, Eric Holland and Jeff Newman.
Defensively Tom Badum and Justin Faber worked alongside goalies
Tim Barela and Hayden Navarro to give possession back to Newport.
CdM boys under-12 All-Stars split
AYSO 57: The Corona del Mar boys under-12 All-Star soccer team
from AYSO Region 57 went 1-1 in the first weekend of playoffs.
CdM beat Tustin, 4-1 in the first game.
John Doering led CdM in scoring with two goals with Ori Tabak and
Camden Nicholson each tallying single goals.
In the second game, CdM tied North Irvine, 0-0.
Bunk Hooper, Connor Bannan and Mike McKenna showed accurate
passing on offense with strong ball-control at midfield led by Hunter
Adler, Cory Donovan and Tommy Bangert.
The defense was led by stopper James Cunningham and defensive
backs Wes Baker, Matt Cohen and goalkeeper Kendall Pick.
The CdM All-Stars are currently in second place.
