Pacific Soccer Club under-11 girls win title

The Corona del Mar-based Pacific Soccer Club girls under-11 team

won the 19th annual Anaheim Canyon Hills Holiday Tournament in Yorba

Linda Saturday and Sunday.

The bronze-level team defeated the Silver Elite So Cal Blues, 1-0,

along with the Extreme, 3-1, and the Coastal Quest Freeze, 2-1.

Its only loss came to the Placentia Wolves, 2-1.

Jackie Dion, Kelly Matthews and Paige Sigband led the team in

scoring with four, two and one goal(s), respectively, while Brynn

Johnson, Melissa Hancock and Azadeh Nazemi anchored the defense with

goalkeeper Corey Cano.

Midfielders Claire Eadington, Lauren Smits, Sarah Mull, Alexandra

Reinach and Shelby Williams controlled the action throughout the

tournament with accurate passing.

“The girls are really starting to gel as we prepare for play in

the California State Cup Tournament early next month,” said Coach

George Eadington. “Their exceptional camaraderie and work ethic has

quickly shaped them into a very competitive team since being formed

last June.”

Lori Manz, a member of the U.S. adult women’s national-champion So

Cal Blues team, along with UC Irvine women’s head coach Marine Cano,

help train the girls.

The team will try for back-to-back titles when competition begins

in the Fury Cup at Aliso Viejo Jan. 18-19.

Two for two for Region 97

The AYSO Region 97 boys under-10 soccer team won its second

tournament in as many chances this season Dec. 28-29 at the Costa

Mesa Classic.

On Saturday the team defeated North Irvine, 7-1, and tied Santa

Margarita, 4-4, then beat San Juan Capistrano, 2-1, and evened

Tustin, 3-3, Sunday.

The team is coached by Phil Miller and Tom Gyulay.

CdM girls under-12 champs

The Corona del Mar girls under-12 Silver All-Star soccer team won

four consecutive games to win Flight 3 of the Costa Mesa Soccer

Classic.

The Blues Clues defeated Laguna Niguel, 2-0, Tustin, 3-2, Newport

Beach, 2-1 and Santa Margarita, 2-1, in the title game.

Forwards Claire Schmidt (five), Amanda Johnson (two), Kathryn

Conner (one) and midfielder Rebecca Beyer (one) all scored goals in

the tournament.

Strong midfield and defensive play was provided by Kimberly

Condino, Taylor Rhodes, and McKenna Caskey with additional support

from Kelsey Davis and Valerie Avila. Amanda Garrett at sweeper and

defenders Blake Gardner and Tasha Greenberg helped in the victories.

Gold good for second

The Corona del Mar Gold All-Star boys under-10 soccer team went

3-1 en route to finishing second in the Anaheim Canyon Hills Holiday

Classic.

CdM defeated the Woodland Hills Rampage, 3-1, Newport Gold, 4-0

and Canyon PSA, 1-0, before losing to the San Diego AAA all-stars in

the finals.

Connor Gaal led the team in scoring with five goals over the two

day tournament while Mason Case (three), Jack Gorab (two) and Hector

Marino along with Blake Thomsen each with one score apiece.

Kjell Walker, Jack McBean and Brent Lawson provided assists. The

defense was led by Brennan Anderson, Brent Gray and Garrett Larson.

Costa Mesa claims title

The Costa Mesa girls under-14 all-star soccer team defeated Aliso

Viejo, 2-1, to win the Costa Mesa Soccer Classic.

A breakaway goal by Lucey Lozano proved the difference in the

championship game for Costa Mesa. Taylor Carpenter scored Mesa’s

first goal, in the third period, on a corner kick by Emily Leece.

Aliso scored with four minutes to play and kept the pressure on,

but Costa Mesa’s defense tightened up to hold off the come-back

attempt.

Costa Mesa outshot its opponents, 12-1, in the four game

tournament, defeating Newport Beach and Tustin, 5-0 in each game, and

tying Huntington Beach, 0-0.

Stellar defense was provided by Leece, Jacqueline Johnston, Diana

Rodriguez, Adriana Triana and Kaily Carich, while tough defense was

given by Rachel Dinsdale, Brooke Wilburn, Carpenter and Taylor Brown.

Forwards Carina Merida, Lozano, Elyse Levin, and Annel Alvarez

kept continuous pressure.

The Storm rules, again

The Storm earned its fourth straight Mite Club League

(10-and-under) championship with an 8-2 victory over the Red Bulls at

the Gretzky Center in Irvine.

The Red Bulls drew first blood in the second period with a

short-handed goal. Ryan Iverson answered with a wrist shot that

caught the top left corner of the Red Bulls net.

The Storm took the lead two minutes later when Steven Kourussel

scored on a breakaway, but it was 3-3 after two periods.

That’s when The Storm went to work with five straight third-period

goals. Max McCourt, Garrett Haar, Kourussel, Iverson and Haar again,

did the trick.

Great passing and strong defensive play came from Blake Kelly,

C.J. Piz, Matt Stahovich and Kyle Laslo. Goaltender A.J. Allen was

solid in the net, stopping 22 of 25 shots on goal.

Golden Hawks on a roll

Ellie Nadal led the Golden Hawks to a 31-20 victory over the

Lakers in NJB girls third- and fourth-grade basketball with a

double-double, scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds.

Chelsea Barth had seven points and Kelsey Woo collected 12

rebounds. The Lakers were paced by Kelsey Carrido, who had seven

points, and Elika Fateri, with six points.

In another game, the Magic edged the Sparks, 16-15. Laura Martinez

led the Magic with seven points and Allie Moskovits handled the point

position and contributed six oints. Alexis Pickering and Duran Sharp

led the Sparks with four points each.

NH frosh-soph unbeaten

Newport Harbor High’s frosh-soph club roller hockey team extended

its record to 7-0-0 with a 5-3 victory over Esperanza Sunday night.

Newport was led by Jesus Sotew (two goals and an assist), and

Grant Casserly (one goal and three assists).

Also with big contributions were Rory Campbell (three assists) and

Linsay Taylor and Zack Boston, each with an assist.

Newport Harbor rolls

Newport Harbor High’s club roller hockey varsity was a 9-1 winner

over Foothill Tuesday.

Collin Insley got the first goal for Newport on a short wrist

shot, assisted by Vincent Mungo and Preston Kelly.

Kelly followed up with a goal off a Chase Kelly assist.

Foothill’s Jacob Primrose broke up the Newport barrage,

temporarily, with a goal off an assist from Shea Ferraro.

Mungo added two more goals and Kevin Wong and Kyle Mathews found

the net to finish their scoring barrage.

Cory Adler turned away a number of scoring attempts by Foothill,

and Alex Crouse and Brett Robinson played a big part in holding off

the Foothill offense.

Elliot Thacker stood out in goal.

Region 57 girls sparkle

The AYSO Corona del Mar under-10 girls golf All-Star team started

their season in great fashion this past weekend by taking second

place at the Canyon Hills Soccer Association Tournament.

The explosive forward lineup was composed of Claire Ham (one

goal), Anna Venturini four goals), Sarah Craig (one goal) and Val

Martin (one goal).

Midfielders Kelsey Kaczmarek (one goal) and Megan Griffin proved

to be solid in the middle and a rock solid defense, consisting of

Elisabetta Impagliazzo, Kayla Schmitt, Erin Almaraz and Dana

DeMiranda, gave up just three goals and were the pillars of the team.

Also notable was the solid goal-tending of Dana DeMiranda and Erin

Almaraz, who made key saves throughout the tournament.

The CdM All-Stars showed great spirit, as well, when they rallied

from a 2-0 deficit in the last game to produce the needed tie to earn

second place in the tournament.

CdM gold team finishes third

The Corona del Mar Gold Team finished third at the Costa Mesa

Classic in late December.

Kaylee O’Connor scored twice to pace a 2-0 victory in the opener

over South Irvine. Also with strong play were sweeper Kellie Langwell

and goalie Allie Pries.

CdM and Rancho Santa Margarita played to a scoreless tie in the

next game, with Pries, Taryn Greenberg, Katelyn Baker, Samantha Gail

and Ashley Svensen standing out.

After a 3-0 loss to La Mirada, CdM came back with a 2-1 victory

over Mission Viejo in a consolation game.

Amanda Bastien and Megan Kim scored second-half goals, and strong

defense by Emily Romano, Greenberg, Baker, Langwell and O’Connor

keyed the victory.

Region 57 registration

The first in-person registration for AYSO 57 soccer will be

Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in the multi-purpose room at Lincoln

Elementary School.

AYSO Region 57 is comprised of the communities of Corona del Mar,

Newport Beach east of the bay, and Newport Coast.

The spring program is open to all children between the ages of 5

to 16 and it includes recreational and competitive tournament levels.

Registration is $60 per child. All players who did not play in

Region 57 during the fall 2002 season need to present proof of birth

date.
