It was a tale of two halves for the Costa Mesa High boys soccer
team Monday as the host Mustangs enjoyed a 1-0 halftime lead, but
Ocean View rallied for four goals in the second half to earn a 4-2
Golden West League decision.
David Barnett scored in the 27th minute for Costa Mesa to give
Coach Antonio Salinas’ Mustangs an edge after 40 minutes. But the
Seahawks scored two goals early in the second half and led the rest
of the way. Jaime Martinez had two goals for Ocean View.
“In the first half, we played very, very well,” said Salinas,
whose team fell to 0-3 in league, 0-10-1 overall. “But in the second
half we played like we’ve never played before in this league. We just
played with a lack of confidence and lack of focus.”
In the 74th minute, Costa Mesa’s Luis Villanueva scored on an
assist from Alfonso Pineda for the game’s final goal.
The Mustangs will travel to Orange Friday for a Golden West League
game at 3 p.m.

The Eagles’ Luis Mendoza scored in the 43rd minute, then teammate

But Westminster (6-2, 2-0 in league) tied the game with two minutes
left in regulation and won it in the second overtime period on Marcos
Ramirez’s goal. Estancia fell to 3-4-1, 0-1-1 in league.
