USF squeaks past Anteaters

The University of San Francisco women’s basketball team hit five
of six free throws in the last minute of the game to clinch a 70-66
victory over UC Irvine in a non-conference game Friday night.
The Anteaters pulled to within 65-63 with 1:43 remaining, but
USF’s Toni Russell hit two, Lisa Whiteside knocked down another
before Joy Hollingsworth clinched the win with two free throws at
10.1 to go. On the evening, the Lady Dons were 21-26 from the charity
stripe.
UCI led by 12 in the first half before USF went on a 16-5 run to
close the half down by one 35-34. San Francisco built a seven-point
lead with 10:08 in the second half, but UCI went on a 9-3 streak to
narrow the score to one (54-53). The led bounced back and fourth
until the Dons decided it on the free throw line in the final minute.
USF’s Lisa Whiteside led all players with 19 points, including
going 11-16 from the line. Joy Hollingsworth added 15 points, while Carey Sauer had 12 points and Mary Jane Krueger totaled 10 points.
Christina Callaway paced UCI with 17 points, 10 coming in the second half.
Callaway also had six rebounds. Wendy Gabbe and Kristen Green
recorded 14 points. Lauren Yadon added 10 points and six rebounds.
UCI falls to 7-4 overall, while USF is 5-9 on the season.
