Vikings down Villa Park

The Larry Doyle Memorial Orange County Championships, hosted by

Edison and Marina high schools, culminated with championship and

consolation finals held on Monday.

In the 13th-place game Monday morning, Marina defeated Villa Park,

54-43. Seniors Sara Marquez, Sarah McLeod and freshman Rachel Maulit

paced the Vikings, who improved to 7-4.

Marquez scored seven of Marina’s first 11 points in the game.

“She played a great game, and we’re getting good senior leadership

from Sara and Sarah McLeod,” Marina coach Butch Fredlow said.

In boys’ basketball holiday tournament action, Edison was to play

host to Estancia Monday night in the third place game of the Estancia

Coast Classic.

The Chargers were denied a bid in the championship final last

Saturday when Villa Park held on for a 54-52 semifinal victory. Tommy

Grady scored 19 points, and David Huff contributed 16 for the

Chargers.

In earlier tournament play, Huff scored 18, Grady had 17 and Steve

Cornett scored 10 more as Edison edged Chaparral, 59-57.

Huntington Beach reached the fifth-place game at the Orange
