Lions open with 59-50 victory

COSTA MESA -- Vanguard University’s men’s basketball team overcame
season-opening jitters in the first half and went on to record a
59-50 victory over visiting Westminster College (Utah).
Josh Pierson answered the call for the Lions in the late going
with a three-pointer to give Vanguard a lead it would not relinquish
(37-34) and James Hartman added a back-breaking three-pointer to give
Vanguard a 51-45 advantage with just over four minutes left.
Conrad Adamczak and Levitlicus Williamson finished with
double-doubles as both had 11 rebounds and Adamczak led the team with
15 points. Williams had 12 points and four assists.

VU women romp
COSTA MESA -- Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team (3-1)
earned an 89-50 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the home
opener Saturday night on the winner’s floor.
Sophomore Jennifer Wilcox and senior Jessica Lenderman combined
for 24 points in the first half to ignite the Lions to a 37-16 lead
in the opening 20 minutes. Wilcox was 7 for 8 in the first half and
finished 31 points in 32 minutes.
Cecilia Josefsson exploded for 15 second-half points to bring her
total to17.

Coast men roll, 75-62
Orange Coast College’s men’s basketball team was a 75-62 winner
over visiting MiraCosta Saturday as sophomore guard Jason Carey hit
five three-pointers and scored 17 points.
“I thought there was a great carry-over from what we did in
practice the last two days into what we did today,” said OCC Coach
Steve Spencer.
The Pirates, 1-2, host Southwestern Wednesday in a nonconference
game at 5 p.m.
