Seahawks step up big

The Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football team played its best ball in
the final month of the regular season and concluded its 2002 campaign
with consecutive shutout victories.
The Seahawks closed out their season last Saturday on a rainy,
mud-soaked Guyer Field at Laguna Beach High by blanking Canyon Hills,
14-0.
Chris Hyden scored two second-half touchdowns to lift Laguna Beach
to its second victory of the season.
The Seahawks’ offense began to click in the second half, thanks to
the sweeping rushes of tailback Kameron Pearson.
With Canyon Hills focused on stopping Pearson and Laguna Beach at
the 48-yard line, Seahawks quarterback Trevor Pierce handed off to
Pearson who, in turn, handed the ball to Hyden.
The sweep reverse worked to perfection. Hyden, using key blocks
from linemen Chris Smith and Shane Snyder, sloshed his way to the end
zone to break a scoreless game.
The Seahawk defense shut down Canyon Hills on its next possession.
The offense began to march again behind the rushing of Pearson.
They reached the Canyon Hills 37-yard line, where Pierce faked the
tailback pitch to Pearson, dropped back to pass and hit Hyden in
strike.
Running a crossing pattern, Hyden made a leaping catch, cut across
the field and outraced the Canyon Hills defenders to the end zone.
Lorenzo Torriero kicked the extra point, building Laguna Beach’s
lead to 14-0.
Defensive standouts for the Seahawks included Hands, Torriero,
Dillon Giaraffa, Matthew Moisen and Dillon Pierce.
Opening up holes on offense were linemen Smith, Snyder, Torriero,
Rhettv Pierson and Landon Turner.
During the Seahawks’ final drive of the game, Pierce connected
with Pearson for a 12-yard completion and, on a halfback pass,
Pearson passed 15 yards to Hyden just before time expired.
