Breakers seek first league win

Having found the going tough the past three weeks, the Laguna
Beach High football team will try to get on the winning track in
Pacific Coast League play tonight when the Breakers host Tesoro.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Guyer Field.
It’s the final home game of the 2002 season for the Breakers, who
close out the regular season Nov. 15 on the road against University.
Laguna Beach has already faced the three schools that reside atop
the league standings. A league-opening one-point loss to Calvary
Chapel was followed by a loss to rival Corona del Mar.
Last Friday, first place Northwood handed the Breakers their third
league setback, 40-13.
Timberwolves quarterback Kyle Harper burned the Breakers with
three first-quarter touchdown passes and Laguna Beach was never able
to recover.
Donnelle Darling led all rushers, with 140 yards on 14 attempts,
76 of those yards coming on a touchdown run on the first play from
scrimmage.
Darling is one of the county’s rushing leaders, with 1,164 yards
and 17 touchdowns.
He is averaging 6.5 yards per carry.
Junior quarterback Alex Wilson was held to just 69 passing yards,
but has still thrown for nearly 1,300 on the season with 11
touchdowns.
The Breakers are led on defense by Marshall Paymard, Brad Wolf and
Brett O’Connor, each of whom are averaging 10 or more tackles per
game.
Tesoro is playing its first full year of varsity football.
Like Laguna Beach, the Titans are seeking their initial PCL win of
the 2002 season.
Tesoro is also 0-3 in league, 1-7 overall. The Titans are coming
off a 42-14 loss to University in a game in which they trailed, 35-0.
The Titans yielded nearly 300 yards on the ground to University.
One bright spot was quarterback Nick Nelson, who finished the game
8 of 19 for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Tesoro’s defense had given up an average of 41 points in three
previous league games, and its offense had scored just 21 points
total.
The Titans have been shut out three times this season and have
been held to a touchdown or less on three other occasions.
Tesoro’s first-ever victory in varsity football competition came
on Sept. 20 when the Titans shaded Ocean View, 16-14.
