Ed Mejia, a former assistant who assumed head-coaching duties last
season when first-year coach Yogi Johnson resigned for medical
reasons, will be joined by Racie Giffin as co-coaches of the Corona
del Mar High softball team, Dawn Payne, the school’s girls athletic
director, announced.
Giffin, a 26-year-old walk-on, comes from Utah, where she was a
varsity assistant for four seasons at Cottonwood High, her alma
mater.
“I’m really excited that it’s a co-coaching situation,” Giffin
said of working with Mejia, also a walk-on who guided the Sea Kings
to their second straight trip to the CIF Southern Section Division IV
Playoffs last spring.
The Sea Kings finished 11-9 last season, 7-3 and tied for second
in the Pacific Coast League with Costa Mesa.
They were eliminated by Rancho Alamitos, 1-0, in a wild-card
playoff game.
Giffin and Mejia will begin working with the team in January.
