A six-goal first quarter started the scoring for Mater Dei High
and the visiting Monarchs went on to defeat Estancia High in a
nonleague boys water polo game, 18-12, Wednesday.
The Monarchs jumped to a 6-1 lead after one quarter and held off
the Eagles, 8-12, 3-3 in the Golden West League, in the Eagles’ final
game of the season.
Jess Hellmich led the Eagles with five goals while Frank Gamboa
added four goals, Anthony Hermann contributed two scores and Ananth
Varma scored one goal. Eagle goaltender Nathan Marsteller made nine
saves.
The Monarchs’ lead proved too difficult to overcome, said Estancia
Coach John Carpenter.
“We came back and tied it, 9-9, but (the Monarchs) pulled away in
the fourth,” Carpenter said. “We had good counterattacks in the
second and third periods.”
