Corona del Mar High hired a replacement Thursday for former girls
basketball coach Elbert Davis, CdM Girls Athletic Director Dawn Payne
said.
James Barkalow III, by way of New Jersey, is the Sea Kings’ new
coach and will guide Corona del Mar through the Pacific Coast League
rigors in 2002-03.
Davis resigned as CdM’s coach Aug. 26 to become the boys
basketball coach at Westminster. His five-year coaching tenure at
Corona del Mar included the program’s first league title in nearly
two decades. The 1999-2000 squad finished 22-6 and captured the
Pacific Coast League championship. The Sea Kings advanced to the CIF
Southern Section Division III-AA quarterfinals that season.
Barkalow inherits a strong freshman class at CdM, in addition to
eight returning varsity players from last season, a group led by
senior guard Kelliann Klein and senior point guard Jackie McCoy.
Sarah Stern, Colleen Marks, Madison Otterbein, Lucy Ramsey, Aryn
Dimas and Lauren Snell also played under Davis last year.
Klein scored in double figures last season in 12 games, including
a season-high 21 points against Laguna Beach. McCoy was injured most
of last season. Otterbein had three games scoring in double digits
last season, while Ramsey had two.
