Orange Coast College sophomore linebacker Dan Steinau, who led the
Bucs with 13 tackles and had a 64-yard interception return for a
touchdown in OCC’s 28-10 win over El Camino Saturday, was named the
Mission Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Of Steinau’s 13 tackles, two were solo with one for a loss and the
other a sack. His 64-yard interception return gave the Pirates a 14-7
lead in the second quarter.
Steinau helped the Pirates hold El Camino to 64 yards on 33
carries Saturday, a 1.94 yards per carry average.
Steinau led the team in tackles last season with 118 and already
has 24 this season, second on the team to defensive end Ryan Miller
and freshman defensive back Nick Dominelli, who both lead the team
with 25 tackles apiece.
Miller, defensive end Jesse Mahelona and defensive back Jason
Brooks received honorable mention for their efforts against El
Camino. Miller sacked El Camino quarterback Ron Venters three times
while Brooks recovered a fumble on the Pirates’ second-half kickoff
to put the Bucs at the El Camino 20, setting up an 8-yard touchdown
run four plays later by Steven Mahelona.
Dominelli intercepted a Venters’ pass and returned it 19 yards to
set up OCC’s final touchdown, a 4-yard run by Steven Mahelona.
Steinau joined Pasadena quarterback John Rattay and Palomar kicker
Ryan Lux on the week’s honor roll.
