Prep tennis: CdM’s Snyder, Ball win PCL crown

NEWPORT BEACH - Corona del Mar High junior Garrett Snyder and
freshman teammate Carsten Ball won a pair of matches Tuesday to claim the
Pacific Coast League boys tennis doubles title at the Palisades Club.
Snyder and Ball, the top seed despite playing together for the first
time, defeated No. 2-seeded Mike Haier ad Matt Chou from University, 6-4,
6-4, in the title match.
Snyder and Ball defeated Northwood’s Ryan Aarnes and Andy Moody, 6-2,
6-0, in the semifinals.
The unseeded CdM doubles tandem of junior Bryan Warsaw and junior
Issei Saida, which upset the No. 3 seed in Monday’s quarterfinal, wound
up third. After a 6-0, 6-1 semifinal loss to Haier-Chou, Warsaw and Saida
defeated Aarnes and Moody, 7-5, 6-4, in the third-place match.
In singles, CdM senior Erik Frisbie, who stepped in for No. 1-seeded
teammate Cameron Ball (sidelined by an inner-ear infection) lost twice
and settled for fourth place. Frisbie fell to Jeff Lawrence of University
in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-2.
University’s Aaron Yovan claimed the singles title, 6-4, 6-2.
Snyder and Carsten Ball advance to the CIF Southern Section individual
preliminaries, May 19 at four sectional sites.
