Golf: Towersey wins record 18th title

SANTA ANA HEIGHTS - Marianne Towersey of Santa Ana Country Club
captured her record 18th women’s club championship Friday and earned an
automatic entry into the sixth annual Tea Cup Classic this summer (TBA)
on her home course.
Towersey, who has won 18 of the last 21 women’s club championships at
Santa Ana Country Club, became the all-time leader in the Newport-Mesa
community for club titles (men or women), breaking a tie at 17 with Dee
Dee White of Newport Beach Country Club.
Towersey, who won Tea Cup Classic titles in 1998, ’99 and 2000, shot
81-75-77-73--306 to win her most recent club championship. Santa Ana
Country Club’s Scoti Carden shot 81-80-77-80--318 to finish second.
The Tea Cup Classic is an 18-hole stroke-play event for the four
women’s club champions in the Daily Pilot circulation and is part of the
Fletcher Jones Motorcars/Daily Pilot Club Championship Series.
Towersey is the second golfer to qualify for Tea Cup Classic VI,
following Olivia Slutzky at Big Canyon Country Club. The final round of
Mesa Verde Country Club’s championship is Tuesday, while Newport Beach
Country Club is slated for May 17.
