Prep softball: CdM’s Tyson recovering

Corona del Mar High junior softball pitcher Amy Tyson was
hospitalized Thursday after being struck in the face by a line drive off
the bat of a Laguna Beach player during a Pacific Coast League game on
the Artists’ field.
Tyson sustained injuries to her face, as well as a concussion,
according to CdM Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick, who was in attendance.
Jelnick said Friday that Tyson was doing well in the hospital and was
expected to be released as soon as today.
“She’s out of school for a week and out of softball for four weeks,”
Jelnick said. “It looked like she tried to get her glove up, but it was
hit too hard and hit her right in the face.” Jelnick said she did not
lose consciousness, but she had trouble giving correct answers to
questions designed to gauge her cognition.
Tyson was an All-Newport-Mesa District performer each of her first two
seasons. She was first-team All-PCL as a freshman and a second-team
all-league choice as a sophomore.
