Girls swimming: Geehr makes splash in return

NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High swimming star Carly Geehr, an

early Stanford signee last fall, won the girls 100-yard breaststroke

Wednesday and helped the Sailors defeat visiting Woodbridge, 89-81, in a

Sea View League dual meet.

It was erroneously reported in Thursday’s paper, which printed the

meet’s official results. The backstroke times were reported as

breaststroke times.

Geehr, making her season debut after July surgery on her right

shoulder, also swam the breaststroke in the Sailors’ winning 200 medley

relay team (1:55.29).

Geehr’s winning time in the 100 breast (1:11.46) was far from her

best, but the Stanford-bound senior continues to be hampered by (left)

shoulder problems.

“By no means am I ready to compete, but I’m a senior and a captain and

I feel that I need to be with the team,” said Geehr, who once won a

silver medal at the Pan American Games and competed in the World Cup in

Shanghai and Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.A highly decorated swimmer

who competes in national events, Geehr was a multi-event standout for

Newport Harbor for three years, before shoulder problems last year.
