Club Roller Hockey: Newport rides into semis

The Newport Harbor Roller Hockey club advanced to the semifinals of
the High School Varsity Roller Hockey Club Finals with a 5-1 victory over
Santa Margarita’s varsity squad Tuesday at the Gretzky Hockey Center in
Irvine.
Vincent Mungo found Chase Kelley twice to start Newport’s scoring run.
Kelley posted a hat trick to give Newport a 3-1 lead to give his team
control in the second period.
David Christiansen, the Sailor goalie, turned away eleven shots in the
first period, 21 shots overall, as Santa Margarita actually outshot
Newport, 21-19.
Brett Anderson and Jared McRae of Newport Harbor broke up many plays,
stuffing breakaway after breakaway.
Cory Adler and Brett Robinson combined for 10 shots on goal in the
third period, and Anderson scored Newport’s final goal.
Newport Harbor plays in the semifinals Monday.
In Newport Harbor frosh/soph roller hockey action:
Newport Harbor 6, Santa Margarita 1 - Zach Boston completed a hat
trick Sunday to lead Newport Harbor into the second round of the
frosh/soph playoffs. Jesus Sotelo scored two goals and added two assists
to contribute to Newport’s win, while Collin Insley finished with one
goal and two assists and Lindsay Taylor also had an assist.
Kyle Pfeiffer, Chris Willard, Bryce Henrie and Kevin Harris provided
strong effort in supporting roles. Jake Merzoian, the Newport goalie,
recorded 17 saves. Newport will face Capistrano Valley Sunday in the
second round.
In Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area Sixth-Grade action:
Kings 8, Mighty Ducks 1 - Rush Stevens sparked the Kings’ offense as
he produced six assists, leading to two goal each by Kevin Kottke and
Connor Corrigan. Stevens’ assists also resulted in one goal each from
Gavin Centeno and J.P. Gormly.
Centeno also scored an unassisted goal, as did Dillon Flinn. Kimmy Von
Der Ahe anchored the defense, while Kottke, Flinn and Gormly also made
key defensive contributions.
