Costa Mesa High’s softball team split its first two games at the
Arroyo Grande Tournament Friday, besting La Quinta in six innings, 7-6,
then dropping a 3-1 decision in an eight-inning tie-breaker to El
Segundo.
The Mustangs will meet Montebello Prep today at 9 a.m. in the
consolation round.
Ann Marie Topps had two doubles in four at-bats with two RBIs, and
Uyen Mai was 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI for the Mustangs in the
opener.
Lauren Demello was 2 for 4 with a double, and Kelly Tops was 2 for 4
with an RBI.
Kelly Topps scored the winning run. She singled, moved up on Katie
Renish’s base hit, went to third on a hit-batter and scored on Mai’s
RBI-walk.
A suicide squeeze and three straight base hits lifted El Segundo to
its victory in the second round after the two teams had battled to a
scoreless standoff through seven.
