A man suffered third-degree burns to his arm after his coffee pot
caught fire in his Newport Beach apartment Thursday afternoon, officials
said.
The man was just moving into his studio unit in the 2200 block of Park
Newport Drive, said Newport Beach Fire Capt. John Blauer.
“He put the coffee pot on the stove,” he said. “After a while, he saw
the plastic pot was burning. It had ignited other areas in the kitchen as
well.”
Firefighters arrived on the scene about 1:40 p.m., five minutes after
they got the call, Blauer said. It took them six minutes to get the fire
under control, he said.
“After that, it was mostly smoke that they had to deal with,” Blauer
said.
The injured man was taken to UCI Medical Center. Two other building
staff members were taken to Hoag Hospital for smoke inhalation.
Twenty-two firefighters responded to the call in four engines, a truck
and two paramedic units.
Blauer said the residents on the entire floor were evacuated but soon
were allowed to return to their apartments. He said the kitchen area,
about 300 square feet of space, was damaged.
