Gold Star girls play unbeaten tournament

The Gold Stars, a girls’ AYSO Under-14 All-Star soccer team out of
Region 117 (Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach), defeated Cerritos in
overtime to win the Hi-5 Tournament championship.
After the teams fought to a scoreless tie through regulation play, the
Gold Stars were able to claim the title on a free kick by Vikki Vandeman
in the overtime session. The free kick was awarded when Madison Empting
was hauled down during a breakaway scoring attempt.
Fullbacks Erin McCarthy and Sheri Rosen led the defensive effort with
Alex Bonsall posting the shutout.
The win capped an unbeaten tournament performance by the Gold Stars,
who went 4-0 overall. Julia Moreno and Megan McCoy led the team in a
tournament opening 3-1 win over Region 5, while the play of Stacy
Ketcham, Lauren Rosche and Stephanie Logsdon stood out in a 9-0 rout of
Quartz Hill in pool play.
Timarie Bryant, Allison Raasp and Nam-Ahn Doan also turned in strong
tournament performances.
The Gold Stars next will represent Region 117 in the upcoming Area K
All-Star Tournament scheduled to begin Jan. 19 at Vista View Middle
School in Fountain Valley.

HB Energy gains tournament title
HB Energy, a girls’ Under-12 Division team out of Region 55
(Huntington Beach) concluded its fall season by winning the Southern
California AYSO Plus Tournament.
Mariah Nogueira turned in a spectacular offensive performance in the
tournament finale against Mission Viejo, as her three goals accounted for
all the scoring as Energy scored a 3-0 triumph. Goalie Sarah Foster was
equally impressive in the victory as she recorded her fourth shutout
during the two day tournament held in Irvine.
The win also avenged a 3-0 loss during the regular season to the same
Mission Viejo team and was the lone loss on the Energy’s record.
Energy opened tournament play with wins over Aliso Viejo and Long
Beach, then followed with a 4-0 shutout of San Juan Capistrano in
semifinal play.
Coached by Mike Edwards, Maggie Holland and Rubens Nogueira, the HB
Energy roster also is comprised of Kellie Cuadras, Alex Edwards, Jennifer
Goble, Marilena Guadagnini, Clarissa Holz, Colleen Kustura, Nicole Luby,
Shima Nooryzadeh, Yesenia Ocampo, Natalie Peterson, Brianna Smith, Giana
Sortino and Katie Welch.
