HAWAIIAN GARDENS - The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team
will resume play after Christmas break with some extra bounce in its step
following Friday night’s 45-22 consolation win over Britannia High of
British Columbia at the Artesia Tournament.
“The monkey is finally off our backs,” a happy Coach Glenn Albios
said. “We’re all excited to finally get that first win under our belts.
We’ve been close the past couple of games, but tonight we finally pulled
one out.”
Evita Castillo led the Sailors (1-9) with 14 points, while Athena
Vasquez chipped in with 10.
The key to Newport’s win came in the third quarter. With timely
offense and stingy defense, the Sailors outscored Britannia, 13-2, and
never looked back.
“We were a little sluggish in the second quarter, so we wanted to come
out strong after halftime,” Albios said.
The Sailors will go for two in a row on Dec. 27 against Dominguez at
1:30 at the Costa Mesa High Tournament.
