Girls soccer: Mesa edged by Irvine

IRVINE - The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team shot itself in the
foot Thursday with a 2-1 loss to host Irvine.
Irvine’s second goal of the game was a Mustangs’ own goal and that
mistake turned out to be the difference.
Sophomore Sharon Day scored the lone goal for the Mustangs (2-2), but
Mesa could not get the equalizer. It was Day’s seventh goal of the
season.
“Irvine’s goalie played great today,” Mesa Coach Dan Johnston said.
“But our goalies played well, too.”
Goalies Chelsea Soria (six saves) and Nichelle Janti (two saves)
helped keep the game close for Costa Mesa.
The Mustangs will play at Laguna Hills on Monday, beginning at 3:15
p.m.
