MAILBAG - Sept. 14, 2000
Once again, the Huntington Beach police officers labor union is suing
its citizens. It should be recalled that this same militant labor union
has sued before . . . staged the blue flu and supported David P.
Garofalo.
It is unfortunate that this should take place at a time when respect
and support for our police is on an upswing as a result of the new
policies of “compassionate policing.”

Conlosh’s comments not ‘straightforward’
Am I the only one who wishes the Mailbag topics would move on to a
more enlightened, informative and factual level?
First, I’ve had some dealings with [Fountain Valley Councilman] Chuck
Conlosh in the past and have found them pleasant and professional. How he
got linked up with the recreational vehicle over-the-edge group baffles
me, but somehow he did, and wrote a manifesto that was hollow.
It was unfortunate at best; ill-conceived at worst. But now he has to
deal with -- week after week -- published letters from Lourdes Peterson
extolling Chuck’s “straightforwardness” “truthfulness” and ability not to
“mince words.”
His attack on high Fountain Valley officials for not doing an
unexplained something about unexplained or undefined hanky-panky, is
anything but “straightforward.”
It is abundantly clear that all this nonsense about how the city is
going to force us to park in our garages is a Peterson red herring to
cover her real motivation -- to park her RV wherever, whenever and for
however long she pleases.
Chuck, how did you ever get embroiled in this fiasco?

Reader sees no proof of wrongdoing with Garofalo
What is the expression -- “Even a war stops?” No so with our mayor’s
[Dave Garofalo] accusations. They just keep going and going, week after
week.
I read all your editorials and mail and guess what? Nobody has proved
any of these charges. You have [Councilman Tom] Harman asking for bank
records, and [Councilman Dave] Sullivan saying no way to letting the
contract run out for a couple more months. He would rather have us spend
our tax dollars on lawyers’ fees. All this with absolutely no proof of
wrongdoing, only suppositions.
Here is the ironic part of all this: The mayor has been purported to
have cast 87 votes that involved issues from companies that took ads in
the visitors magazine. Now please tell this senior, were any of these
votes detrimental to the majority -- repeat, majority -- of citizens of
Huntington Beach?
One of your readers cited that Wal-Mart divided our city. That’s
hogwash. Wal-Mart is a win-win for our city. We need money for our
schools, Police, Fire departments, etc., from rents and taxes, not
propositions that will raise our property tax.
Everyone wants to live in a safe, clean, beautiful city, but this
takes money, and it doesn’t grow on trees. From what I have seen, the
mayor has gotten more money for us without jeopardizing the integrity of
its citizens.
If the naysayers want the mayor’s hide, let them get a referendum and
vote him out, otherwise be constructive not destructive.

Eileen Murphy accuses me of stating that Debbie Cook ran for City
Council last election period. I am sorry Ms. Murphy, but I did not even
imply that Ms. Cook had run for office. You will have to contact the
Independent editorial staff for that editing error. Bob Biddle criticized
me for submitting a “mean-spirited letter.” Is any opinion that the
Huntington Beach Tomorrow group pursues, that the majority of our city’s
voters reject, “mean-spirited?”
You seem to point to the past when using Measure C as an example. I
agree. Measure C was good for our city, that I am sure, only newly
qualified.
Further, I did not say the ladies mentioned “came out of the closet,”
as you claim in your letter. If you are going to quote someone’s remark,
your quotation should be verbatim. Being president of Huntington Beach
Tomorrow, your defense of your members is admirable, but I suggest a more
calm evaluation of any future negative comments regarding your members.
