Sewage spill closes part of Newport Bay

County officials closed part of Newport Bay to swimmers and scuba
divers Monday after a sewage spill at the Lido Marina Village vessel pump
polluted the water.
The affected area, from Lido Isle Bridge to 300 feet up the bay along
the Lido Village Marina docks, will remain closed to water-contact sports
until the results of a water quality test are available, officials said.
The Orange County Health Care Agency will continue its investigation
today.
A Newport Beach resident noticed some spillage Monday morning while
pumping sewage at the station at Lido Marina Village, said Tony Melum,
director of the city’s harbor resource division.
A line from the sewer to the pump station broke, but there was no way
to measure how much spillage occurred, Melum said. The pump was put out
of service Monday.
