Deffenbaugh wins Pro/Am tilt

Huntington Beach’s own Jeff Deffenbaugh earned the top prize of

$2,000 Sunday by winning the Pro/Am Division at the Huntington Beach

Pro/Am Surf Series’ double-rated event held at the south side of the

Huntington Beach Pier.

Deffenbaugh scored an average of 8.5 on his first wave in the final,

then caught four more solid waves to the beach to capture first place.

Newport Beach’s Richie Collins placed second overall, Bron Heussenstam

was third, and Dino Andino placed fourth.

“Jeff performed some of the hottest surfing all day,” Huntington Beach

Pro/Am Surf Series Event Director Seth Matson said.

When asked what he would do with the $2,000, Deffenbaugh responded:

“I’ve got to pay my house mortgage with it.”

The two-day event was held under sunny skies, before a large crowd

along the Pier, and athletes competed in 6-8 foot monster peaks.

Other division winners included Chas Chidster (Super Grom); Chase

Newsom (Boys); Brandon Guilmette (Juniors); Greg Eisele (Mens); Jason

Haughey (Masters); Liz Kampen (Womens), and Quinton Macklin (Longboard).

The next Series event will be held July 22-23 at 9th Street in

Huntington Beach, the same weekend as the Blue Torch Pro is scheduled to

run. Due to limited space, Matson encourages all competitors to

preregister to guarantee their entry into the competition.
