The Newport Balboa Rotary Club, which sponsors the city of Newport
Beach’s track meet, honored 20 stars of the recent meet by hosting them
and their parents at an awards dinner at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.
More than 90 people were in attendance, including city of Newport Beach
Leisure Services staffers Trenton Veches, Darin Loughrey, Mike Helenihi
and Desiree Delgadillo. The Rotary Club provides funding as well as
volunteers to serve as field judges and timers for the annual event.
The evening’s speakers included Bill Sumner, track coach at Corona del
Mar High School, and Olympic-class runner Cathy Smith.
Rotary track meet chairman Art Walton and club president Jim Sirkin
presented Okazaki Friendship Medals to the 20 athletes who set 23 city
records this year. Some were triple event winners. Receiving the
Okazaki-Newport Beach medals were Michelle Allred, Jasmine Day, Nick
Lewis, Brian Ford, Amando Diesen, Nina Conrad, Jackie Dion, Noelle
Esquer, Michael Hadden, Richard Self, Mellissa Swigert, Nathan Eon, Sarah
Toberty, Mikia Braun, Hyrum Taylor, Michael Rndraszczyk, Carlo Valdes,

THANK YOU LETTERS:
After their field trip to Hollywood fell through this past week, I
assisted 170 Pomona Elementary School third-graders in making arrangement
with Edwards Theaters to see the movie “Dinosaur” at Triangle Square. The
neat part of the whole experience was receiving ‘thank you’ letters from
teacher Jennifer Taylor’s class.
Here are some of the letters:
o7 “Thank you for helping us to get our movie tickets to see ‘Dinosaur’
on Tuesday. I really enjoyed the movie. Without your help, we wouldn’t
see the movie. I thank you one more time and your daughter too. My class
liked it too and I enjoyed it. My friend Magali was crying because she
didn’t like the movie. Your friend, Genesis.”
“Thank you for helping us to get our movie tickets to see ‘Dinosaur’ on
Tuesday. Good thing there’s a teacher that has a father working at the
movies. Another thing your daughter is very pretty. I hope you get to see
the movie too. If you see it you may want to see the movie again. Good
luck at your work. Again thank you very, very, very, much. Your friend,
Maricruz.”
“Thank you. It was a little hard walking to Triangle Square. I liked when
the policeman said peace to us. Your friend, Darlene.”
“Thank you. If you didn’t help us, we wouldn’t even go to Triangle
Square. But you saved our lives! Sometimes it smelled bad in the street.
We went walking to Triangle Square. But I thought we were going to walk
to Hollywood until I saw Triangle Square. Your friend, Joanna.
f7
The real thanks go to Jim Edwards’ secretary, Sally Hill, who on an
hour’s notice coordinated the arrangements with Triangle Square staff so
the 170 children and chaperons could see the movie. Thanks!
