NSSA Southwest Conference crowns 10 champions

The National Scholastic Surfing Association crowned 10 champions at

the conclusion of their 10th and final event of the 2000 Southwest

Conference season Wednesday at 54th Street in Newport Beach.

The lone Huntington Beach athlete to win a division was Edison High

senior Tim Reyes, who was the overall winner in the Explorer Juniors

Division.

Reyes, however, finished fourth in the standings at Wednesday’s

competition in an event won by Kyle Knox.

Reyes swept to three NSSA titles this year, winning the prestigious Open

Mens and the High School Mens, and now the Explorer Juniors championship.

In addition, Reyes won a total of 12 events during the course of the

season -- the most wins of any NSSA competitor this year.

Reyes’ win in the Explorer Juniors Division came despite his missing two

of the 10 competitions.

Other division winners during Wednesday’s competition included Chad

LaBass (Mens), Travis Mellem (Boys), Tanner Gudauskas (Menehuene), Holly

Beck (Womens), Travis Northey (Longboard), Greg Browning (Masters), Mike

Gillard (Seniors), Scott Lewis (Super Seniors), and Chiron Stewart

(Bodyboard).

In addition to Reyes, other overall division winners during the 2000

Southwest Conference Explorer season include Austin Ware of Solana Beach

(Mens), Travis Mellem of San Clemente (Boys), Jensen Hassett of Del Mar

(Menehuene), Holly Beck of San Diego (Womens), Chad Wells of Seal Beach

(Masters), Chas Wickwire of Seal Beach (Seniors), Scott Lewis of Los

Angeles (Super Seniors), Travis Northey of Laguna Niguel (Longboard), and

Chiron Stewart of Costa Mesa (Bodyboard).

The NSSA Western Championships are slated for May 18-21 at the Huntington

Beach Pier. The Western Championships is a six-star rated event that will

determine seeding position for the upcoming 2000 NSSA National

Championships.
