A new day

CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s boys soccer team, hasn’t
experienced a lot of recent success. In fact, the Sea Kings won their
first league game in three years last season.
“Obviously, the last three years has been kind of dark,” new CdM coach
Scott Dameron said.
Last year’s team went 5-12-4, 1-7-2 in the Sea View League. With the move
to the Pacific Coast League bringing a less competitive schedule, CdM is
primed for a turnaround.
If there is anybody qualified to bring light to a soccer program, it is
Dameron. He is also the head coach of the Vanguard University women’s
soccer team, which he guided from its infancy to three consecutive
winning seasons (1995-97).
It is up to the players to win on the field, and Dameron will have a
deep, senior-laden team which can improve tremendously. One of those
seniors is forward Adam Hoyt, a first-team all-league player last year,
when he led the Sea Kings in scoring.
“He’s a really clever player,” Dameron said. “He’s good at beating
players one-on-one, and he’s really got a nice shot. He doesn’t need a
lot of space to shoot the ball.”
Hoyt will be helped out by senior Patrick Seabourn who was the offensive
MVP of the junior varsity team last year. Sophomore Aldo Bautista, who
was impressive as a freshman with Shogo Fujii, will start with Hoyt.
While Hoyt will be the primary option near the opposing goal, defender
Mike Pallazola will enforce the other end.
“He’s going to be carrying a lot of our defense,” Dameron said.
Ethan Austin and Reed Glyer are other returning varsity members.
Senior John DiCesare, the defensive MVP on last year’s JV squad moves up,
along with JV MVP David Mittman.
Other talented athletes include junior Danny Marshall, whose speed makes
him dangerous. Senior Jon Schrank should bring speed and athleticism.
The starting goalie will most likely be senior Cedric Chun, who won the
starting job with his strong play, according to Dameron. Freshman Charlie
Coppersmith is another goalie, who will push Chun for playing time.
With a number of experienced athletes, CdM has a season to look forward
to.
“One thing we’ve really had is overall athleticism,” Dameron said. “We’ll
emphasize team speed and athletic ability.”
CdM’s season started off rocky, a 3-1 loss to El Toro. The Sea Kings were
hit by the flu bug, losing players to illness and injury. With the
players adapting to a new coach, there will be some growing pains. But
once things settle down, CdM’s depth should kick in.
“By the time league rolls around,” Dameron said, “we’ll be OK.”
