Football: Newport-Mesa blanks Orange
NEWPORT BEACH - Quarterback Allen Pineda ran for one touchdown and
threw for two more to lead the Newport-Mesa Irish Seahawks to a 49-0
drubbing of the Orange Chiefs in the first scrimmage of the 1999 season.
Matt Encinias scored twice on long touchdown runs, while Omar Ruiz and
Jose Zuniga each scored on runs of 10 yards or less.
Pineda’s touchdown passes went to Brian Campos on a quick hitch pass
and to Travis Winrow on a 40-yard streak.
The Seahawks are a combination of players from Newport-Mesa Junior
All-American and the Costa Mesa Pop Warner Cowboys.
Neither squad had enough players to field a team so Cowboy coach Mike
Cota took his players over to the Newport-Mesa Seahawks.
