NEW YORK, New York - Newport Beach’s Lindsay Davenport will look to
defend her 1998 U.S. Open title, but she will not do at as the top seeded
player.
That honor belongs to Martina Hingis, who will be making her third
straight appearance at the U.S. as a top seed.
Hingis lost to Davenport in the finals last year after capturing the
single’s title in 1997.
The 18-year-old Swiss remained on top of the WTA rankings ahead of
Davenport after winning the du Maurier Open in Toronto this past weekend.
Hingis has seemingly recovered from a loss in the French Open final
and a first-round exit at Wimbledon.
Venus Williams, Monica Seles and Mary Pierce, Amanda Coetzer, Serena
Williams, Jana Novotna, Julie Halard-Decugis and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
round out the top 10.
