Newport Harbor cleaners take a deep dive to remove waste

Scuba divers went beneath the surface of Newport Harbor on Saturday morning to pick up trash and other jetsam during an underwater cleanup.

Environmental group Help Your Harbor organized the event, which is in its third year.

Divers and volunteers in small boats scoured the harbor for litter and other debris, earning prizes for things like the most unusual item found.

In the past, divers have pulled up furniture, shopping carts, purses and wallets and a holstered gun.
