H.B. council to choose new mayor; may shut special district for Beach Boulevard of Cars

The Huntington Beach City Council will choose a new mayor from among its ranks Monday and consider shuttering a special assessment district that promotes Beach Boulevard of Cars.

Both the new mayor and mayor pro tem will serve one-year terms.

Former Mayor Jim Silva will administer the oath of office for mayor and City Clerk Robin Estanislau will administer it for the mayor pro tem.

The move to discontinue the Huntington Beach Auto Dealers Business Improvement District comes at the request of the area’s auto dealerships, whose 10-member association voted in October to dissolve it because they felt the district was no longer needed to sustain their business plans and marketing goals.

The district, established in 1992, levied a special assessment on its participating businesses. The funds were used to promote their shared interests, such as the large sign near Beach Boulevard and the 405 Freeway.

The council meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 2000 Main St.
