Huntington Beach man killed by suspected DUI driver while riding e-bike on PCH identified

A man struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver while riding an e-bike on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach Tuesday evening has been identified, according to an Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman.

Timothy John Briley, 42, of Huntington Beach, died from injuries sustained during the collision, Sgt. Scott Steinle said Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle — Barbara Front, 70, of Huntington Beach — was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, police reported.

The incident took place at 6 p.m. when a 2018 Toyota RAV4 traveling south on PCH collided with Briley, who had been traveling north in the southbound lanes of the highway, just north of Admiralty Drive, according to a release issued Tuesday by the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Officers responding to the scene found Briley in the roadway in critical condition. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Orange County coroner’s office listed his time of death at 6:40 p.m., Steinle said.

Front remained on scene and cooperated with officers. A Huntington Beach Police arrest log indicated she was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence at 7:40 p.m.

HBPD’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is overseeing an investigation into the incident. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it is asked to contact traffic investigator Jeremy Rounds at (714) 536-5670.
