Huntington Beach High, Civic Center reopen after armed suicidal man surrenders

A suicidal armed man in the Civic Center Plaza in Huntington Beach Monday morning prompted the immediate lockdown of nearby Huntington Beach High School, City Hall and Police Department headquarters.
The lockdown at the high school was revoked at 10 a.m., according to a post from the police on social media, and City Hall and police headquarters reopened by 11:25 a.m. after the man, in his late 30s, surrendered and was detained without incident.
City spokeswoman Jennifer Carey confirmed the lockdowns occurred at around 9 a.m. this morning and police were notified of the armed individual around the same time. Early police reports noted the individual was isolated to an area within the plaza, and crisis negotiators were in contact with him.
“We appreciate our partnership with the Huntington Beach Police Department and their effective efforts in keeping our students and staff safe,” said Huntington Beach Union High School District spokeswoman Noel Adamson.
