Guitarist Diego Garcia stays true to Latin music’s roots

When asked to describe his music, guitarist Diego Garcia did not hesitate in an interview with Efe to describe himself as “an electric guitarist” who “stays true to the roots of Latin music,” and in that same spirit the Spaniard prepared for his first concert in Los Angeles.

The musician, known as “El Twanguero,” is known internationally for the special “twang” sound that vibrates between Spanish guitar, American folk, flamenco, tango and his impeccable command of fingerpicking.

“Playing in Los Angeles and the United States in general is very important to me. (Los Angeles) is a city with a lot going on, musically speaking,” the 37yearold guitarist said.

For his concert Sunday at the Club Fais Do Do, Garcia brings a sample of his music at its best, a mix of classical guitar, folk, flamenco, and now tango from his latest disc made in Buenos Aires together with Diego “El Cigala.”

His latest work, “Romance de la Luna Tucumana,” won Garcia a Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album as a producer and for the modern contribution of his electric guitar, though always with its vintage twang.

The Los Angeles concert kicks off several more concerts in California: July 8 in Altadena, July 11 in San Diego, and July 12 in Palmdale, from where Garcia’s music will travel south to Mexico City.

“And right after that very important show in Mexico City, I fly to Madrid for seven straight concerts at Madrid’s top jazz club,” the guitarist, who had just played to a full house in Vancouver, Canada, said.
