Man enters plea in Oceanside gang murder

An Oceanside probationer accused in a gang fight last week that turned deadly pleaded not guilty to murder charges Wednesday.

Torrey Michael Deangelis faces 77 years to life in prison if convicted of all the charges, said Deputy District Attorney Cal Logan. He is accused in the shooting death of Ozzy Maturano, 18, of Oceanside, and also faces three attempted murder charges for shooting at others.

Vista Superior Court Judge Marshall Hockett ordered Deangelis, 20, held in lieu of $5 million bail. At the time of the shooting, Deangelis was on probation for an assault in Riverside County.

Police arrested Deangelis on Sunday, two days after 18-year-old Ozzy Maturano was found face down about 6:40 p.m. Friday on a bike path north of Neptune Way near railroad tracks. He died at the scene.

The killing happened after two groups with ties to rival gangs got into a yelling match that escalated into a brawl that ended with Maturano being shot, police said.
