SAN DIEGO — A knife-wielding woman shot and killed by a San Diego police officer over the weekend was identified Tuesday as 33-year-old Maria Zarco.
Zarco died from multiple gunshot wounds Saturday in the 12:30 a.m. shooting that took place in a parking lot outside a home in Bay Terraces, officials with the Medical Examiner’s office said.
Police were called to the home on Quebec Court after reports that Zarco was on a rampage.
She had stabbed her 9-year-old son and her boyfriend and also attacked her 15-year-old son with a vase, police said.
When officers arrived they found the agitated woman holding a large kitchen knife threatening two men who were trying to calm her down, police said.
An officer ordered the woman to surrender but she raised the knife over her head and charged at him and he opened fire, homicide Lt. Jorge Duran said.
Zarco died at the scene. Her boyfriend and her sons were taken to hospitals.
The officer involved was identified as Michael Barrett. Barrett, 31, has been on the force for five years, police said.
