Piano teacher’s students shine at state

POWAY — Phyllis Bouck has taught piano independently in Poway for 34 years, and was honored this year when two of her students were selected to perform at the Music Teachers Association of California state convention, held June 30 in Santa Clara.
Stacy Luu and Shawn Oh were among several hundred students who performed in recitals at the convention because they received outstanding scores on their Certificate of Merit Evaluations. The performers were selected out of 30,000 students from across the state.
A Certificate of Merit is a comprehensive evaluation once a year sponsored by the teachers association, Bouck said. It involves performance, technique, sight reading, theory, and ear training.
Stacy, 18, graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School and will attend University of California Davis this fall. Shawn, 12, will be an eighth-grader at Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch.
