Two arrested in Lemon Grove fatal shooting

Two San Diego men have been jailed in connection with the March 14 shooting death of a 23-year-old man at his Lemon Grove home, sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Alfredo Hayes, 19, was arrested about noon Thursday on University Avenue near 44th Street in City Heights, sheriff’s homicide Sgt. David Martinez said.

Eugene Veal, 18, was arrested on Cedaridge Drive in the Skyline neighborhood about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Jail records show that Veal was booked on charges of murder, sales or transportation of marijuana, and burglary.

Avel Michael Jordan Edgar was shot once in the head at his home on Mount Vernon Street near Washington Street about 9:45 p.m. on March 14, authorities said. Edgar died at the house.

Several people were in the home and at a second home on the property when the shooting occurred, investigators said.

Martinez said he would not release any information about a motive for the shooting. He said detectives have not recovered the gun.

Records at El Cajon Superior Court show that Edgar pleaded guilty in September to charges of possession of marijuana and a deadly weapon, a set of metal knuckles. He was sentenced on Nov. 17 to 120 days in jail and three years’ probation.

The San Diego Regional Task Force worked with sheriff’s homicide investigators to find Hayes and Veal, Martinez said.
