Placido Domingo adds an opening act, philharmonic to his Las Vegas show

Reporting from Las Vegas — Not only will opera tenor Plácido Domingo be in Las Vegas for Mexican Independence Day festivities on Sept. 15, but he has now announced that he’s bringing guest conductor Eugene Kohn and guest soprano Ana Maria Martinez to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace for the performance. All will be backed by the Las Vegas Philharmonic, also just announced.

“The King of Opera” has performed more than 3,700 times in 146 different roles, figures said to be unmatched by any other opera singer in history. Just recently, he added several baritone roles to his list of achievements as a tenor.

His more than 100 recordings have earned him nine Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammys, and he has won two Emmys for his television appearances.

During the 1990s, he performed with José Carreras and the late Luciano Pavarotti as the Three Tenors.

The Madrid native moved to Mexico when he was 8 to attend Mexico City’s Conservatory of Music. He made his debut at 18 with Mexico’s National Opera, and his first performance as a leading tenor took place two years later.

In 1965, after three seasons with the Israel National Opera, he launched his international career.
