Female Elvis joins Valentine’s Day wedding crush in Las Vegas

A new wedding chapel, a new Elvis, and a pop-up marriage license office at the airport all point to signs that the Valentine’s Day wedding crush is under way in Las Vegas. More than 1,500 marriage licenses, double the usual number, are issued around this time of year.

For Holly Vaughn, the love holiday is the first time when she will entertain couples at Sure Thing, a new wedding chapel at 1110 E. Fremont St. in the burgeoning Fremont East entertainment district. She wears a rhinestone-studded costume with a wide belt and blue suede shoes.

“She’s our gender-bending Elvis,†said Victoria Hogan, a partner in the new chapel. “She carries this energy and personality that is very engaging and fun.†Hogan has provided pop-up weddings for the past five years, often using the Southern Nevada desert as the scenic backdrop.

“Although the wedding chapel landscape is very saturated, I did feel there was a room for a new concept, a new sort of aesthetic approach,†she said of her bricks-and-mortar venture.

Sure Thing avoids what she called the “kitschy atmosphere†of traditional chapels and replaces it with rotating works of original art in a minimalist setting designed for a handful of guests.

Weddings cost $450, including an officiant, two Polaroid photos, and a Sure Thing memento. Couples can add $300 for an appearance by the female Elvis.

For a more standard Vegas wedding, the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas offers a luxe Elopement Package for $1,495, from Thursday through Sunday.

Couples receive an officiant for a daytime wedding, plus cake, Champagne, flowers and photos. The price also includes a guaranteed window table for a special Valentine’s four-course dinner, featuring roasted chicken breast, filet mignon, sautéed salmon, and vegetarian Wellington. The dinner also is available for non-newlyweds, starting at $125 per person.

Now about those marriage licenses at the airport. You’ll find the pop-up office open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday in Terminal 1’s baggage claim area. Licenses cost $77. Check out the requirements on the Clark County’s website beforehand.
