Hong Kong: Tea dances waltz back into the picture at the Peninsula

The Peninsula Hong Kong is inviting guests to step back into an age of elegance as the hotel reintroduces tea dances, once a famed afternoon ritual in the lobby.

As part of the celebration of its 85th anniversary, the Peninsula is reviving some of the customs that evolved during its history. Sunday afternoon tea dances once offered the Hong Kong community a prime spot to socialize, dance and listen to music.

The 2013 version features a 10-piece band and is to be held from 3-6 p.m. the first Sunday of every month through November. Cost is $127.

“To celebrate the Peninsula Hong Kong’s 8 1/2 decades and salute the hotel’s glamorous past, we are pleased to offer guest experiences that pay tribute to the beloved traditions of both the Peninsula and Hong Kong,†said Rainy Chan, Peninsula area vice president.

Among the other activities planned for the yearlong celebration are a commemorative eight-course diamond jubilee menu at Gaddi’s restaurant and a Peninsula Academy program during which guests meet city artisans.

The hotel is also offering a luxury suite program to mark its anniversary. The package, available until Dec. 20, includes a stay in a harbor-view tower suite, airport transfers by Peninsula Rolls-Royce, daily breakfast for two and a choice of other amenities including spa treatments for two and a helicopter tour for four. The cost is $2,550 for the first night and $1,095 for the second.
