Daily Deal: Learn how to handle a houseboat at Lake Powell

Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas in Tuweep, Ariz., offers a weekend course about the ins and outs of piloting a houseboat and learning some of the basics of boating. The weekend class and stay starts at $299, which includes practice sessions and some meals.
The deal: Houseboating 101 is offered on six weekends between April and October. It’s a great instructional opportunity for first-timers who might be intimidated about how to handle houseboats and powerboats on the massive reservoir that straddles Arizona and Utah.
During the weekend, participants receive hands-on practice on how to drive, anchor and tow a boat and learn boating and navigation rules too. The two-day session comes with daily breakfast and box lunch for two.
When: Courses are offered April 26-28, May 3-5, May 17-19, Sept. 20-22, Sept. 27-29 and Oct. 4-6.
Tested: I found availability for a room with two queen-sized beds at the Wahweap Marina for the class starting April 26. The $299 rate covers instruction plus taxes and fees. The same room on the same night would cost $10 less, but that’s without the houseboat course and without meals. Note too there’s an additional $15 charge to enter Glen Canyon National Recreational Area that’s good for a week.
