Las Vegas: ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ lands at Harrahs
The story of one of the greatest jam sessions in music history comes alive in “Million Dollar Quartet,” the latest Broadway show to arrive in Las Vegas. The musical opened this month in the Harrah’s Showroom.
The production tells the true story of the December 1956 gathering of four legendary musicians – Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley – at Sun Records in Memphis. Sun founder Sam Phillips, often referred to as the father of rock ‘n’ roll, helped launch the careers of each of the recording artists. The Memphis meeting was the only one ever to include all four.
The Tony Award winning production is a showcase for several hit songs. They include Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Walk the Line,” Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire” and Presley’s “Hound Dog.” One of the other featured tunes, “Blue Suede Shoes,” was written and first recorded by Perkins and later covered by Presley.
“Million Dollar Quartet” is staged at 7 p.m. Thursdays-Tuesdays with a 9:30 p.m. performance on Thursdays and Saturdays. The show is dark on Wednesdays.
