National parks and forests go fee-free for Veteran’s Day weekend

National parks and national forests have a Veteran’s Day deal open to all: free admission. Not all parks and forests charge an entry fee, but those that do will welcome visitors free of charge.
The deal: The weekend marks the last fee-free day in 2012. (The next one is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in mid-January.) This means you save the $20 entry fee at national parks such as Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon and the $5 Adventure Pass fee in the Angeles National Forest and other nearby forests.
When: Parks and forests are free Saturday through Monday.
Tip: Many parklands also have free hikes or campfire talks that will coincide with a free visit. Do some research on the park or forest you plan to visit. For example, Yosemite on Monday offers free ranger-led walks about photography (9 a.m.), Yosemite’s first people (2 p.m.) and an evening program (7:30 p.m.).
Note that fee-free days apply only to admission to national parklands (campgrounds and other reserved areas remain in effect) and not to California State Parks.
