Romania: Cross Transylvania and stay at Prince Charles’ house

While most of the royal goings-ons this summer take place in Britain, here’s a chance to stay at a royal residence -- in Romania. But don’t expect grand furnishings or elegant decor at this property in the tiny town of Viscri.
Prince Charles, according to his website, over the years has taken a keen interest in historic Saxon homes that are disappearing from the Romanian countryside. In 2006, he restored the 18th century house in Viscri, which has become part of the itinerary in a tour called the Transylvania Traverse.
The trip from BikeHike Adventures based in Vancouver, Canada, features 10 days of walking, mountain biking and horseback riding through the Carpathian Mountains and the Eastern European countryside. It’s an opportunity to see medieval churches, Old World farms and castles along the way. The trip begins and ends in Bucharest and visits towns such as Magura, Viscri, Sighisoara, Malancrav and Biertran.
When: Trips depart July 20, Aug. 24 and Sept. 7.
Price: $3,299 per person, double occupancy. It includes accomodations, some meals, transportation within the country, bikes, airport transfers, guides and more. International airfare is extra.
