China: Raffles to open on Hainan Island

When the new Raffles Hainan resort opens in March in China, guests will have their choice of exotic decor: They can choose from a wing where rooms are designed in a Balinese style, or from another where the decor is inspired by Asian ethnic hill tribes.

Hainan is one of four new Raffles Hotels & Resorts projects planned during the upcoming two years; others are scheduled to open their doors in the Philippines, Istanbul and Indonesia.

“The opening of our Hainan resort ideally complements Raffles’ flagship heritage hotel in China -- Raffles Beijing,†said Herbert Laubichler-Pichler, general manager of the Hainan hotel.

Raffles, a luxury hotel company, has a history dating to 1887, when Raffles Hotel Singapore opened. The company has eight high-end properties, many in Asia, and prides itself on giving each hotel its own personality and sense of place, said Laubichler-Pichler.

Hainan Island is known as the Chinese Riviera, offering long sandy beaches and year-around sun.

The beachfront Hainan Raffles, with 299 rooms and 32 villas, sits in a new coastal development called Clearwater Bay, which includes two seaside golf courses, a 200-boat marina, a shopping mall and yacht clubs. The hotel will feature water sports and a spa, and will offer Raffles butler service to guests.

Rates at Raffles Hainan start at $300 per night double.
