Apocalypse, schmapocalypse: Here’s Maya info you can believe
Good news — the end is near. In just a few days, we won’t have to hear any more 12/21/12 Mayan apocalypse nonsense, at least not until the next addled end-of-the-world idea gains currency.
But it wouldn’t hurt to look busy until then, right? And the Maya territory in and around the Mexican state of Yucatan is as fascinating as jungle ruins and a half-lost civilization can get. So maybe you want click above and listen to some Maya tour guides in Mexico’s Yucatan talk about tourist traffic and doomsday. (I interviewed them while tramping around Maya sites in Yucatan several months ago.)
Or you could watch this video about who and what remains of the Maya.
Or you could read this article about why the area is among the safest in Mexico.
Or you could check these then-and-now photos by photographer Macduff Everton.
