Santa Cruz: Aloha Celebrity Races & Polynesian Festival

The annual outrigger races in Santa Cruz are aimed at novice paddlers -- and those who come to cheer them on. The fest that follows has flower leis, Hawaiian shave ice and Polynesian dance performances.
When, where: Aug. 19 at the Santa Cruz Wharf, entrance at Beach Street and Pacific Avenue.
Admission: Free for spectators. To participate, $80 per four-person team; price increases to $100 starting Wednesday.
